DOTS

Background and Challenge

National guidelines were recenlty updated to recommend cervical cancer screening every three years instead of annually, and to monitor young women with abnormal cells every six to 12 months rather than treating them immediately.

SOM Tech partnered with a PCORI-funded team to develop a patient-centered iPad app that educates young women about the risks of over-screening and explains the new guidelines for both normal and abnormal test results.

Preparing Young Women for Shared Decision-Making

The iPad app intervention was delivered before patients met with their doctor, preparing them to ask informed questions and actively participate in shared decision-making about their treatment. Youthful, colorful, and engaging, the app was designed to capture attention and make complex information accessible. The study took place in Southern California clinics serving primarily underinsured women (40% Latina) and featured a bilingual interface (English and Spanish) with three intervention arms.
